Review on πŸ”§ Efficient Power Steering Pump and Alternator Remover/Installer Tool: OTC 4681 by Aaron Carney

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Well done - Here are some much needed Northstar info pics

Update 10/6/15: I just replaced the valve cover on a Northstar V8 - wow that job sucked! It takes a while, but it's doable. The rear takes the most time, but to remove the front I had to loosen 2 engine mounts and tilt the engine backwards. Ultimately, the OTC 4681 is not the ideal tool for this job for two reasons: 1) The flange that grips the pulley is too thick - I had to grind .020" from the bottom for it to fit snugly. pulley groove. It's easy if you have a knee mill, but I bet most people don't have one. Although you can use a grinder in a pinch. (See penultimate picture) 2) The plug on the installer's end screw is the wrong size for the Northstar camshaft which requires an M8 thread size. I ended up making a new adjusting bolt using a 5/8" fine thread shank I had lying around, an M8 bolt, a roll pin and 5/8". I used a lathe to drill and tap the end of the 5/8" shank onto the M8. I sawed the threaded portion off the M8 bolt, screwed it into a 5/8 bolt and a 5/8 nut on one End of stud welded (see last photo) Overall this tool is very well made and great for precision fitting alto and pulley pulleys PS That's a mouthful I had a longer puller from KD Tools (I think) has two removable jaws but I had to remove the camshaft pulley that drives the water pump a Northstar V8 engine and my old one had the tool too long - definitely leaves me some room.OTC usually make great tools and this one looks nice , although it is made in Taiwan I have added some pictures so you can get a better idea of the dimensions and what each part is and Note the hole on the back of the tool eugs - you can put a 3/8 inch extension there to keep it stationary. We'll let you know how well it works.

Pros
  • Lots of good vibes
Cons
  • Safety
